Raku is an ancient Japanese method of firing pottery where previously bisqued pots are glazed with special Raku glazes, placed in a gas kiln and heated very quickly to about 800c. They are then removed and placed in combustible materials which can create interesting smoke patterns and colour effects.

At Crazy About Clay's Raku site (near the drop off area of the lower car park), we will be firing the kiln on Sundays and Food Fair days (weather permitting). Come along and buy a pot (prices from £5), glaze it with a special Raku glaze and watch it go through the firing process. It takes about 30 minutes and you can take your pot away with you right away.  Please note that Raku pots are decorative only, and not suitable for food use as they may not be waterproof.
